Local Permits and Certificates of Insurance

Learn about requirements about possible permit requirements when running a Paddle Canada program in your area.

Type:PolicyAudience:Instructors, Instructor Trainers

It’s imperative that businesses, individual owner/operators and Instructors offering or instructing Paddle Canada sanctioned courses ensure that they have appropriate permits, licensing and insurance coverage. It is also important to familiarize oneself and comply with any local business licensing requirements.

Instructors may be required to meet minimum certification requirements, safety standards, and/or obtain business permits that apply prior to conducting any registered courses in municipal areas, Indigenous territory, or Provincial or National Parks. Prior to conducting courses contact appropriate agencies to confirm any requirements are met.

Certificates of Insurance

As part of the permitting process they may require certificates of insurance (COI) with both the applying party and the venue named on the certificate. As this may be a lengthy process, it is prudent to start this process well in advance of any courses at these venues.

Paddle Canada can provide COIs to requesting organizations detailing the coverage it provides but is unable to name individual Paddle Canada Instructor Members or their associated businesses. You are encouraged to confirm with the venue to determine if this type of COI is acceptable.

It is unethical for a business or Instructor to attempt to bypass a venue permitting process.

Courses with all instructors and participants listed must be registered in advance of any course in order for the course to be sanctioned by Paddle Canada, for certifications to be awarded, and for insurance to be valid. Neither the insurance nor certification is valid unless the course is reported and closed.
