Instructor Trainer Assessment Skills and Knowledge Checklist

Learn what skills and knowledge should assessed during each instructor trainer mentorship.

To complete the Instructor Trainer Development training, the mentor must observe the following list of competencies from the Instructor Trainer Candidate.

Please note that the list is broken up into Mentorship #1 and Mentorship #2. If your discipline or certification level only requires one mentorship, then the IT mentor will combine and observe the complete list of competencies.

Mentorship #1

Paddle Canada Organization and Structure

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the historical origins of Paddle Canada, the fundamental principles and goals of Paddle Canada as well as how Paddle Canada is funded, governed, and managed,
  • state the mission of Paddle Canada, and
  • demonstrate knowledge of local, regional, and national structure of Paddle Canada and its provincial/territorial members.

Policies and Procedures

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the respective program manual, and
  • demonstrate knowledge and the proper process of Paddle Canada course registration and sanctioning.

Communication & Instructional Skills

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • teach a minimum of three topics of which at least one is land based and at least one is water based,
  • provide clear and appropriate feedback to instructor candidates,
  • provide clear directions that are easy to understand and heard by all,
  • demonstrate ability and willingness to serve as a Paddle Canada role model,
  • demonstrate the effective use of various teaching and student engagement methods (for example, IDEAS),
  • demonstrate the use of teaching to the standard, and testing to the objective,
  • demonstrate the effective use of instructional aids,
  • demonstrate effective use of the natural environment to maximize learning,
  • facilitate and engage the candidates providing individual feedback as necessary, and
  • assist with both mid-course and post-course debriefing processes.

Documentation & Course Follow-up

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • demonstrate use of skill sheets and evaluation forms, and
  • document Instructor Candidates’ learning and areas of needed improvement throughout the course.

Mentorship #2

Policies and Procedures

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • demonstrate understanding of the requirements for enrolling and reporting an instructor course, and
  • demonstrate knowledge of the policies and appropriate decision-making skills regarding Pass, Weak, Incomplete and Conditional Pass.

Communication & Instructional Skills

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • provide clear and appropriate feedback to instructor candidates,
  • provide clear directions that are easy to understand and heard by all,
  • demonstrate ability and willingness to serve as a Paddle Canada role model,
  • demonstrate the effective use of various teaching and student engagement methods (for example, IDEAS),
  • demonstrate the use of teaching to the standard, and testing to the objective.
  • Demonstrate the effective use of instructional aids,
  • demonstrate effective use of the natural environment to maximize learning,
  • be responsible for, and took the lead on all pre & post course communication with instructor candidates,
  • be responsible for and took the lead on both mid-course and post-course debriefing, and
  • take the lead on teaching at least 75% of syllabus throughout the course.

Planning and Logistics

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • describe the process to register an instructor course with Paddle Canada,
  • describe the materials and equipment needed to teach an instructor course,
  • identify environmental factors/climate settings that may influence a course setting and is able to mitigate those factors as appropriate, and
  • develop an outline for the full course, and lesson plans for all segments where the Instructor Trainer Candidate is responsible for course delivery.

Documentation & Course Follow-up

The Instructor Trainer Candidate will:

  • demonstrate use of skill sheets and evaluation forms,
  • document instructor candidates learning and areas of needed improvement throughout the course,
  • accurately register Paddle Canada training on the course administration website,
  • accurately report Paddle Canada training on the course administration website,
  • accurately explain the criteria for grading course participants, including policies and documentation requirements for pass, weak, conditional pass and fail.
